My thoughts on Ethnography

When it comes to Ethnography, I think that there is a lot to acknowledge and would be great to learn about the process it entails.

Ethnography deals with studying people and their culture. There are numerous types of cultures distributed all over the world and we wouldn't know about them all if we didn't have people like Ethnographers who study these cultures, record notes, and then make them accessible for us to see.

These people who devote their life to their job and to find out about these cultures do several different things to do so. They...

  • Ask questions
  • Observe and watch
  • Interact with them
  • Care for them
  • Help them out
  • Form bonds
  • Become apart of the community

Because of these people we are able to attain so much more information on the diversity of cultures and individuals located all over the world.

How to look at social networking

After reading the article Social networking sites and our lives I personally believe that some social networking sites can be beneficial and very useful for people dealing with specific circumstances. For instance, using Facebook as a way to keep in touch with family or friends scattered all over the world can definitely be a benefit and used toward people’s advantages.

People in your life who you don’t get to see too often can become more apart of your life when you get involved or connected with them on different social media sites. It may not be the same as seeing the ones you love face-to-face, but at least you are able to communicate with one another. Plus, the fact that most social networking sites are free is another positive point. Just because someone logs into Facebook regularly and on a daily basis doesn’t mean that their life is being taken over by a networking site. People all over have their own reasons to why they would join a media site and be so involved with it, which may not always be a bad thing.

So of you aren't abusing the social networking site for bad publicity or overusing it, but instead staying connected with loved ones, friends, or even involving some work use throughout your day then it shouldn't have such a negative outcome.

However, I also think that if you are logging into to Facebook or any other networking site just because you’re bored or have nothing else to do, then you may have a problem. I think people shouldn’t rely on social media sites when they really don’t have to.

People who use Facebook too much and revolve their life around the site(s) may start to have a problem. After a while, people will just get used to talking and communicating to others only on Facebook or other media sites, instead of participating in real life activity.

Networking sites are great when you are able to connect, share, and visualize how certain individuals are doing, but at the same time too much social media can become an issue. Nowadays, almost everyone is somehow connected to a social networking site and some believe it is creating a problem. Nonetheless, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and decide on their own if they think social networking sites are bringing us together or tearing us apart.

Google or not to Google

 GOOGLE

Throughout our daily lives, I would have to agree that we, as people, use Google for several different reasons. At some point it may seem as if Google could eventually take over everything we do. Many people depend and rely on Google for important requests of information. I can’t lie and say that I don’t depend on Google, because when I need to look something up I don’t know or when I want to watch a video I always end up using Google. However, I don’t necessary think that it's a bad thing, because no matter what I’m going to look up what I need to. So, why not use Google?

I can say honestly say that I trust them and are very happy with the services they provide. It may appear as if Google has a great amount of power over our lives but, we hold the power to be able to choose if we want to use their search engine or not. I don’t think everyone is addicted to Google because, for me, I just use Google’s search engine on occasion when I need too.

Converging Media

One way on how convergence has helped consumers be involved with the media is by letting them have a variety of options when it comes to cross multiplying platforms. For example, Sirius Radio has a main source of consumer support through content being broadcasted through vehicles radios. They also branched out and have their own television stations providing music in different genres and topics of conversation. They provide the radio service streaming online for their customers. Also, they have mobile applications that can be added to any device for free of charge. Sirius Radio has taken up a huge step in converging all types of media platforms in order to get their service to consumers in any way possible.

Another example of how convergence is empowering consumers to participate in media is by having huge companies like Target and Wal-Mart take a step into converging media by offering applications like Target Cartwheel, which offers discounts and deals on top of sales already in progress, and the Wal-Mart application. Plus, both stores offer their entire online shopping experience without having to step foot in a store. Both companies have commercials, newspaper advertisements, billboard advertisements, television sponsors, and corporate press releases every month, as well as radio advertisements to get consumers into their stores.

Convergence has become very important during this technological time because it combines computing, communication, and content all into one element.

A Blog's Creativity

The blogger I chose to write about is named Megan Reardon and her blogger name is "Not Martha". Megan is a crafter and a blogger who blogs because she claims it's "a place for me to keep things I am interested in."

Megan becomes involved with things that simply catch her attention or if she sees any unique ideas from somewhere. Some reasons to why she blogs is because it helps her keep track of her thoughts and ideas she was interested in and blogging lets her express her own personal voice. Having a blog is a good way to keep notes and ideas organized when trying to reference back to them.

I think the way Megan goes about her blog is very resourceful and crafty. She is basically her own boss when writing because she can write whatever she wants whenever she wants without any pressure. Also, she can write or blog whenever new inspiration comes to her because she has no deadlines to deal with. Plus, she has a blog to help her remember things and give new understandings to others.

Clearly, Megan loves what she does since she has never stopped and because she enjoys the information and people she meets online. Her own site reaches to about 4,000 visitors a day, which is amazing and something she should be proud of!!
